Course Description
This two-hour professional development training equips clinical social workers with an evidence-informed understanding of perimenopause and menopause, with particular attention to how hormonal transitions intersect with mental health presentation and life span transitions. Participants will explore common and less-recognized symptoms, the neurobiological and psychosocial mechanisms underlying midlife change, and the ways these experiences may mimic or exacerbate mood, anxiety, trauma-related, and cognitive disorders. Emphasis will be placed on differential diagnosis, culturally responsive assessment, and clinical implications for treatment planning when working with adults in midlife.
Learning Objectives
- Identify core physiological, psychological, and cognitive symptoms associated with perimenopause and menopause and describe their prevalence and typical course.
- Differentiate menopausal-related symptom presentations from major depressive disorder, anxiety disorders, ADHD, and trauma-related disorders.
- Apply a biopsychosocial and lifespan-informed framework to conceptualize mental health concerns in midlife clients.
- Integrate screening questions, referral considerations, and collaborative treatment approaches into clinical practice to improve diagnostic accuracy and client outcomes.
Target Learner
The target learner for this training is mental health clinicians and social workers.
