Course Description

This course will introduce the concepts related to neuron communication and neurotransmitters. Then, we will use those foundational understandings to reveal how commonly misused drugs interact with the brain's neural circuitry and ultimately change the brain and alter behaviors.

Learning Objectives

  1. Describe the mechanisms by which neurons communicate in the central nervous system.
  2. Explain how commonly misused drugs influence the mesocorticolimbic pathway and its role in goal-directed behaviors related to drug rewards.
  3. List and describe common behavioral and pharmacotherapeutic strategies used in the recovery from substance use disorders and explain their effectiveness.
